Automotive technology has been getting better for decades. In many cases, this helps to keep people safe. For example, blindspot monitoring systems and backup cameras can help to prevent accidents that otherwise would have taken place.
However, some researchers claim that this technology is actually making the roads a more dangerous place. People are too dependent on technology, and so they are becoming worse drivers.
Counting on the vehicle
The problem is that some drivers put too much faith in the vehicle to protect them and they do not pay enough attention to the road or take active steps to be safe.
For example, some drivers have automatic braking systems and forward collision warning monitors. These are supposed to stop the car before it rear-ends another vehicle. But if a driver is so dependent on this system that they’re busy looking at their cellphone, counting on the car to stop itself if necessary, they could be involved in an accident that they otherwise would’ve easily avoided.
Another example of this is when technology can’t go quite far enough. A backup camera does create greater visibility directly behind a vehicle, but drivers are still instructed to look both ways before backing into the street. Inevitably, though, some drivers back out in front of cars that simply haven’t come in view of the camera yet. Once again, they were depending on the technology, rather than checking traffic conditions themselves.
